Big Rivers Lose Most Of Their Fish Species

BOGOR: The Ciliwung and Cisadane rivers have lost almost all of their fish species over the past decades due unchecked degradation of the rivers’ water quality, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) reported Wednesday. “Our 2009 research found there were only 20 fish species exist in Ciliwung and 38 species in Cisadane, far less than the numbers mentioned in some old texts, which are 187 fish species in Ciliwung and 130 species in Cisadane,” Renny. K. Hadiaty, a researcher from the institute’s Biology Research Center, told reporters. According to Renny, the declining number of fish species in the river should also serve as a warning for people living near the rivers to take more care with their health. — JP
