World Agroforestry Centre Memorial Fellowship (2009)

ICRAF is pleased to announce the availability of thesis research fellowships for postgraduate students wishing to conduct thesis research in collaboration with ICRAF Scientists (see the attached brochure). The fellowships are tenable at any university in countries where ICRAF has effective scientific contacts. The upper limit for the support is US $ 5,000 to cover field research and thesis production.

1. Eligibility

a) Be a national of a developing country involved in Agroforestry research, education or development
b) Candidates must be 35 years of age or under
c) Be registered for a postgraduate degree at a recognised university (evidence required)
d) Show evidence of interest in Agroforestry research by producing an Agroforestry research concept (max 3 pages, covering title, objectives, hypotheses, methods and tools, location, duration and budget)
e)Have completed or be close to completing coursework for the graduate degree for which she/he is registered
f) Be an employee of a university or a national research institute

2. Conditions

a) It is assumed that candidates will have other grants to meet their tuition and other expenses related to the studies
b) The grant will be used to cover expenses arising from field research (including travel), laboratory analysis and thesis production
c) The thesis research will be jointly supervised by the University where the applicant is registered. Each institution will appoint a suitable supervisor
d) Supervisors will receive a travel grant (where justified) to meet once. The travel grant shall not exceed US $ 1,500. This shall be additional to the US $ 5,000 given to the student
e) Applicants will abide to ICRAF Policy guidelines on Research Ethics

3. Selection process

All applications should be sent to the address below. The process involves announcements, proposal review, and selection of grantees by a small panel of ICRAF senior staff.

4. Requirements

a) Fill in an application form (
b) A letter of recommendation from employer/ institution
c) A three-page concept note (stick to Global research priorities identified below)
d) Certified copies of certificates
e) Up-to-date CV
f) Two recent passport size photographs
g) Evidence of registration for a Masters Degree Programme

1. Global Project 1: Domestication, utilization and conservation of superior Agroforestry germplasm
2. Global Project 2: Maximising on farm productivity of trees and Agroforestry systems
3. Global Project 3: Improving tree product marketing for smallholders
4.Global Project 4: Reducing risks to land health and targeting Agroforestry interventions to enhance productivity
5.Global Project 5: Improving the ability of farmers, ecosystems and governments to cope with climate change
6.Global Project 6: Developing policies and incentives for multifunctional landscapes with trees that provide environmental services
