Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA News) – North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang will represent Indonesia to conduct diplomacy at the United Nations as part of efforts to popularize the plan to hold a World Ocean Conference (WOC) here in 2009.
“The President has appointed me to conduct diplomacy at the UN, particularly to lobby the United States and France at the 18th meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in New York on June 18-25, 2008,” he said on Tuesday.
The WOC which will bring together a number of heads of state/government and marine and environmental experts is the world`s important agenda to protect the sea from global warming.
In conducting the diplomacy, the governor said he would remind the world community of the important role played by Indonesia in saving the planet from the global threat.
The WOC meeting scheduled for May 11-15, 2009 will be preceded by a Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) meeting on how to save the world`s coral reefs.
During his visit at the UN, the governor said he would hold talks with the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) and attend a meeting of the Global Forum Steering Committee to discuss preparations for the WOC.
The governor on behalf of the WOC`s national organizing committee will later sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Forum as a follow-up to discussions held in Hanoi, Vietnam, some time ago. (*)
