Informasi SIM – Canberra

Saya pernah menanyakan ke petugas ACT Rego tentang apakah status saya sebagai mahasiswa disini perlu melamar untuk buat SIM ACT atau tidak. Saya memang sedikit khawatir apakah SIM dan terjemahan dari KBRI cukup untuk bekal saya mengemudi selama empat setengah tahun di sini. Jawaban petugas Urban Services sangat mengembirakan bahwa mahasiswa asing di Canberra tidak perlu mendapatkan SIM ACT untuk mengemudi. Karena mahasiswa asing di ACT dikategorikan sebagai Visiting Driver. Saya bahkan juga informasikan bahwa ada kasus meskipun udah ditunjukkan SIM dan terjemahannya tetap aja polisi masih ngotot. Petugas tersebut menimpali; ini saya berikan peraturannya. Peraturan tersebut juga bisa di akses melalui penjelasan tentang SIM di ACT.  

Moga informasi ini bisa menepis keraguan yang juga sering saya rasakan. Tips yang harus diingat, jangan lupa bawa SIM dan terjemahannya kalau mengemudi. Plus, ada baiknya peraturan di bawah ini juga diletakkan di dalam mobil. jadi kalau ada polisi yang ngeyel, mungkin bisa ditunjukkan peraturannya.

Visiting driversVisiting drivers are not required to obtain an ACT Driver Licence providing their overseas licence and International Driving Permit are current. A visiting driver is a person from overseas who arrives in the ACT with no intention of becoming a permanent resident. This includes:

  • tourists;
  • business people;
  • people on working holiday visas; and
  • people studying or working temporarily in the ACT who intend to return to their home countries when they finish their courses or jobs.

When driving in the ACT a visiting driver must carry:

  1. their foreign driver licence and an International Driving Permit; or
  2. if their foreign driver licence is not written in English, it must be accompanied by an official English translation issued by the National Accreditation Authority For Translators and Interpreters.

Note
 
An International Driving Permit is only valid if it is accompanied by the foreign licence.
 
Visiting drivers may only drive vehicles they are permitted to drive in their home country and must comply with any restrictions endorsed on their overseas licence.
